Group 3 of the 1970 World Cup was named El grupo de la muerte, the group of death and rightly so. The teams in the group:
1. Brazil, the best team in the world at that time and still considered to this day the greatest team that ever walked on a football pitch.
2. England, world title holders.
3. Czechoslovakia, vicechampions in 1962.
4. Romania, the outsiders, qualified for the first time since 1938.
The first match of the group, England - Romania was a very balanced game, but luckier and more experienced, England won 1-0. Then Brazil trashed Czechoslovakia 4-1 In the second matchday Romania beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 and Brazil won 1-0 in a very exciting match against England. The third matchday pared England, who needed a win to be sure of qualifying, with Czechoslovakia. Romania, who desperatly needed a win, had to play Brazil, who was almost sure of qualifying even with a loss. I uploaded this last game because this was arguably the thoughest challenge Brazil had in the entire competition, even if they were sure of playing the next round. One thing worth mentioning is that the main player for Romania, Nicolae Dobrin who is still considered the best Romanian player who ever lived did not play a single minute in this world cup. He wasn't injured or suspended. The coach at that time Angelo Niculescu, now at 88, is stil asked by everyone he meets "why didn't Dobrin play?"
