My name is Kim Smith. I came from a very small town of 800 people called Embro. For those of you who have heard of it before (Kudos!)
I am currently living in Toronto, Ontario. I am an aspiring cinematographer who is in my third and final year of the Broadcasting and Film program at Centennial College. I am a candidate to graduate this April 2010. After graduating I am going to pursue a career in cinematography.
A project that I am working on now is a feature documentary; My Mother, Your Nanny. It explores the effects of separation between Filipino nannies and their biological children. We see the struggles that the mothers endure as they move halfway across the world in order to provide for their families back home. While raising another family's children, these mothers are absent in the upbringing of their own offspring. This absence results in alienation between mother and child; they become strangers. This documentary questions how much Canadian society values the work of its caregivers, who are treated with a lack of respect and dignity because Live-In Caregiver programs fail protect their most basic rights. Filipino nannies are ready to speak out, and it is time that they are heard. I am the director of photography for this documentary, and it is now featured on my demo reel.
