FWIW, nothing beats automotive brake cleaner for getting the cosmo off the wood..it won't harm the original finish & the cosmoline just flows off. Spray on heavy, wipe off with soft cloth (I use old t-shirts), and it'll leave your original finish like new & non-slimy.
