@housebitchrules Actually, I think it is (was) to prevent your _own_ army from retreating.. they'll _have_ to fight and beat the enemy to survive. (Might be related to that armies sometimes have been forcefully recruited, so the soldiers motivation might not have been on top to begin with...)
