my horse did the same thing when he was on a solo hitch to a plow; the way to control them is to hold about 2 feet away to their head, and plant yourself on the grond. NEVER try to hold down their nose, they hate that!

there are restricters that tyou can attach to his legs so that he can only trot a certain way, plus, when he rears, you need to reach up and smack him, if he spooks, then you keep hold of the lines, and do not let him move!
