ZARIANI ABDUL RAHMAN In MEMORIUM -- AL FATIHA
(IN MEMORIUM) AL FATIHA to my BELOVED youngest SISTER ZARIANI who passed away 10 months ago on Monday 25 January 2010 (9 Safar 1431). She is greatly missed by our family and all who loved her. Memories of taking care of her the last 3 months at home and 5 weeks in hospital during her illness -- Cancer are still heart breaking for us. Till today my family is very devastated and grief stricken on her passing and I feel shattered till now. Our prayers & Du'a that ALLAH (GOD) with his GREAT MERCY grant arwah ZARIANI a place in SYURGA JANNAH FIRDAUS (HEAVEN). AMEEN. AL FATIHA. Sunday 21 November 2010
The selfless Zariani was always concerned and worried about other peoples' problems -- ever ready with a helping hand for the poor, the needy and the oppressed. These are the memories we cherish of her untiring readiness to go all out when someone is desperately in need. From the five foot way street cobbler to the fishmonger in the wet market, the street sweeper and the mee (noodles) stall vendor & pedlars and village folks they were her friends. She was the one who had no reservation in meeting people from all walks of life as she loved meeting and talking to people wherever she was whether in a foreign country or back home.
In remembrance of Zariani I will continue creating documentary videos of my youngest sister Zariani at Q&A sessions at International Conferences and Forums and Talks which she had been invited as a speaker. She had an important message to deliver in each video. Zariani was not IT savvy. She preferred reading books and watching World News updates on TV.
Zariani Abdul Rahman was born in Seria, Brunei Sultanate. Under the aegis of her parents she did GCE A levels in England and chose (Soviet) Government and Politics as one of her A Level papers at Stafford House Tutorial College London/Dover and Wandsworth Technical College, London (1973 -- 1975). She graduated with BA (Hons) in Russian & Soviet Studies in Portsmouth University (1976--1982) with one-month summer study tours to Moscow, Leningrad in Russia and Karkov in Ukraine. My late father Abdul Rahman Hj Mohammad (d. 1983) a writer inspired her in her writings in her later years.
After graduating Zariani returned home and joined Wisma Putra/Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982 as Attachment Officer, AS/Assistant Secretary of East Europe, OIC, Planning/Kampuchea Desks (1982-1986) and Administrative/Diplomatic PTD Cadet-Officer at INTAN/National Institute of Public Administration (1987 --1988) with a short spell at a military school and police college/station. Zariani was vocal in her written appraisal concerning some of the modules conducted at INTAN. She was the only one they failed a week before getting the Diploma hence she could not go back to Wisma Putra. Embittered Zariani regarded it -- "My 1987 unfair, cruel and illegal job dismissal without financial compensation."
Later she became an independent writer. Zariani wrote and published 3 books under her own publishing license, AL-Ahad Enterprise. Her first book is Dance of Death (Poetry & Prose,1989, ISBN 983-9961-0-1, second book is Escape From Berakas! 1962 Brunei Revolt (History/Politics,1992, ISBN 983-99611-X, third book is Hitler & The Wandering Jew (History/Politics,1994, ISBN 983-99611-2-8).
In 1989 she went to Bogor, Indonesia to interview both Sheikh Azahari the Brunei Rebel leader and Rtd. Indonesian General Nasution for her Brunei Book.
In 1994 Zariani did her interviews in Jammu & Kashmir State, India and in 1996-1997 in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan for her book on Kashmir. Zariani interviewed various Militants and Mujahidins. Apart from JKLF, are the pro-Pakistan Militants, HM, Muslim Mujahidin, Al-Jehad, Hisbollah, Tehriq-ul-Mujahidin, Hisbul Muminin (Shia), Ikhwan-ul-Muslimin - new name JKIF (Jammu Kashmir Islamic Front), Al-Mujahid, Harkat-ul-Ansar, Muslim Janbaz Force in both Kashmirs referred to the Khilafat/Caliphate and they called their leader Amir.
Committed in her promise to the ordinary Kashmiri people to make their voices being heard she presented personally her proposal on the Kashmir Issue to Tan Sri Razali Ismail former UNITED NATIONS/UN SECRETARY-GENERAL'S SPECIAL ENVOY TO MYANMAR & to Kofi Annan former UN Secretary Geneneral. She tried her best to raise questions on Kashmir at almost every conference she attended.
Her 700 page Manuscript on Kashmir Book done in 1999 remained with incomplete concluding chapter.
Based on her 3rd book "Hitler & the Wandering Jew" she was invited to participate and gave an unprepared impromptu last minute speech at the Holocaust Conference in Tehran in December 2006 where she stayed on for a month after the conference visiting her Iranian girlfriend in her Portsmouth University student days. She was invited for a week visit to Arbil in Iraq by an Iraqi family guests at the hotel where she stayed in Tehran.
