@Steinweg9 Agree completely. One should listen to Popp in this aria to clean out one's ears also from the likes of Dessay and Damrau. It also sounds like Sills was just plowing through it without interest like she said. The second is better than the first but not by much.

The style here is a bit too operatic. Later on she did songs from musicals such as Oklahoma, West SIde Story and even Porgy & Bess on RAI in a more popular, speechlike style.

Beautiful, and you can even understand what she's saying! Strange, even the best singers had this aria as a stumbling block. The dive into the chest voice at the end is surely a trap that many sopranos simply avoid.
