It's such a shame that people couldn't live as mixed race people openly with dignity in those days. Even today, people want to put their own emotional and political agendas onto those who are of mixed parentage.

I think you are very right is much of what you say, and like WhereYaBoss said, African Americans in the US need to hear this, as do certain whites. The attachment and embrace of the one drop rule is INCREDIBLE. Thank you for your articulate explanation of your views.

My experience has been very opposite to what you suggest; I grew up with an Afro-Latina mother- same as Soledad O'brien, but without my white father. However; as in the film Imitation of Life, I was extremely resentful of the fact that I was forced to live in a ghetto/lower income housing project...

This father- looks like he HIMSELF is mixed race- like quadroon or something...

I am deeply gratified that you pick up on this. I've had black people give me weird looks & stare up in my face for as long as I can remember, for the simple fact that I exist. It's wonderful that a white barber is irritated by this, and not just multi-ethnic me;)

All I can say is that if we imprison every kid who goes on a rampage, there won't be much room for anyone else or many kids left free.

There's more value in helping kids like Wayne turn their lives around than in simply punishing them and making hardened criminals out of them.
