Indiana Black Expo's Youth Video Institute (YVI) is an organization of excellence. The year-round program is designed to train youth from ages 13-19 in all areas of video production. The program, developed in 1983 with the help of American Cablevision, has grown into a self-supported program. YVI has its own in-house studio, which includes state-of-the-art non-linear digital editing equipment.

The program's goals extend beyond the confines of Metropolitan Indianapolis. Our focus is statewide with similar programming in South Bend and Elkhart. Our technology focus extends beyond the basics. We wish to capitalize on the effective role technology plays in remedial training for reading and math. We are providing access to bilingual training for our growing Hispanic community. We have included Spanish language software and bilingual peer mentors to help overcome any communication gaps. Phase I will start early October. This introductory course will be held on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. â€" 8 p.m. on the lower level of the Indiana Black Expo offices located at 3145 N. Meridian Street. This course will run from October to May. Phase I is open to any eighth, ninth and tenth grader. Phase II is a course specifically designed to filter new students to the 360 Degrees production crew. The intermediate course also runs from October until May. This course is more fasted paced than Phase I. Phase II students will shadow 360 Degrees crewmembers as they produce segments for 360 Degrees. Students do not have to complete Phase I in order to participate in Phase II, but must have some previous experience. The summer session meets weekly, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the YVI studios located on the lower level of the Indiana Black Expo offices. Both courses are not restricted to the designated week days listed. There may be weekend filming for certain projects. Students will be informed of schedule changes prior to class time. The Youth Video Institute will recruit new participants at the beginning of each school semester. YVI applications are available online at www.IBE360.com. Presentations are made to area middle and high schools (IPS, townships & private) to the Telecommunications, Drama, and English Departments. YVI's ongoing effort "360 Degrees" is a newsmagazine style show that showcases youth issues. This 30-minute program is totally written, produced, directed and edited by youth. The program airs four times a week on the Education Access Channels. The project involves a diverse group of youth representing the entire Indianapolis community. The main objective of YVI is to train students in television and video production while reinforcing positive self-esteem. This program allows students to work behind the scenes, using various equipment and getting "hands on" experience. However, YVI does not just technically train youth, but also involves them in worthwhile projects that impact their communities and peers. YVI also hopes to develop closer relations with other local media outlets and TV stations in the Indianapolis area. YVI's goal is to create relationships with students who aspire to be visual storytellers. Since its inception, YVI has and will continue to impact the lives of hundreds of students.
