"Young and Divine is one of those spur-of-the moment, diamond-in-the-rough bands that if left to their own devices, are guaranteed to blow up big and blow your mind in the process. Thanks to the best efforts of lead singer/songwriter Johnny Clark, Drummer Joe Bortscheller and the internet, the band acquired Jake Mai who quickly relocated to NY from TX to take over the lead guitar/backing vocal duties in the summer of 2007. Since the formation of it's all-star lineup, Y&D has been getting massive media buzz and tons of "we love you" MySpace comments from fans.Their self-titled debut album is laden with hard rockin' youthful exuberance and well-versed upbeat guitar pop. The band's DIY attitude makes their harmonic driven rhythms that much more alluring and intriguing. Songs like "Friday Night" and "Undercover Lover" don't disappoint and add an almost mystic appeal to the album as a whole. The quirkily poetic "Weakdays" is a darn catchy song with simplistic boogie-woogie melodies and a slightly synthesized feel.
Clark's vocals soothe on the sympathetic "Show Me You're Alive," which is an ode to breakups, love, life, and longing while "Retro vs Techno" is, dare I say, a unique mix of retro and techno dance riffs that every red-white-and-blue blooded American teen should have blasting through their ipods.
Call them what you want... powerpop/techno/indie/emo, but all and all Young and Divine is a cut above every other emerging indie band out there and a superb addition to any music-lover's collection."
