The Black Guerrilla Family was founded in 1966 by George Lester Jackson, W.L. Nolen, David Johnson, James Carr and other black racist convicts in California's San Quentin state prison. The revolting gang's founding fathers were inmate writ writers and adopted the ideology and militia structure of the Symbionese Liberation Army. There objective in starting the gang was to unite incarcerated black inmates and kick off a violent uprising against what they believed was a racist white prison administration.
The BGF attracted thousands of angry African-American offenders with little to lose. The ruthless gang was responsible for dozens of staff assaults and even the brutal murder of a Marin County court judge in 1970.
