Jesse Day (artist name: XYL) is a Canadian Hip-Hop artist hailing from Victoria, BC with a passion for creating multi-cultural and multi-lingual music with beats that blend Hip-Hop and Dance Pop together. With a variety of styles and themes to his work, Jesse's tracks include guest appearances by artists from China, Korea, Japan, East India and Africa among others, all performing in their native languages and bringing a piece of their cultural identity into the music. Despite the wide range of cultural diversity present in the songs, danceable beats and emotion-provoking hooks are always the mainstay in your average XYL track.

Jesse started rapping at age 8, being influenced by old-school artists such as the Beastie Boys, Run DMC and LL Cool J. "I remember recording my raps on a small toy tape recorder when I was little" he says. Besides Hip-Hop, Jesse developed an interest in many genres of music and had a passion for classic poetry such as Thomas Hardy and Emily Dickinson, which helped to hone his lyric-writing abilities. Having learned to play the clarinet, bass guitar, electric guitar and drums by the time he was out of middle school, he formed several bands in high school ranging from punk rock, to funk, to heavy metal. After relocating to Vancouver, Jesse began to take the idea of a career in Hip-Hop seriously and partnered up with local promotion company SPM Music to not only perform but organize and promote a monthly Hip-Hop night to showcase home grown talent called 'Wordz From Tha Underground'. Over the course of the 2 years he performed in Vancouver, Jesse began to build a steady fanbase of Korean, Chinese and Japanese students who were in town to study English. "It was really interesting, every time I played a whole bunch of Asian people would show up and promoters would be pretty baffled, wondering why the club was suddenly full of Asians."

Jesse took the emergence of his Oriental fanbase in Canada as a sign that he should take his act overseas to the Asian continent. He settled first on Beijing, having had an interest in Chinese culture from a young age due to the influence of Bruce Lee films he used to watch every day as a youngster. There, he collaborated with Hong Kong native Kaila So to create his first multi-lingual track 'The Dragon' and later, partnered up with Beijing-based MC Malabo from Equitorial New Guinea in Africa for 'Crush You', an aggressive mix of English and Spanish raps. In addition to live performances in clubs all over the country and on national television network CCTV-Music, Jesse also traveled the country modeling for Swiss fashion brand Strellson and was the featured subject of a documentary series about his music and life on the Travel Channel China. After experiencing China for a year and a half, Jesse felt it was time to move on to Seoul city in Korea to explore the entertainment industry there.

Korea provided its own sets of challenges and opportunities but things started out rough. "When I first relocated to Korea I had very little money, very few connections and was living in a room the size of a closet," Jesse recalls. "In a way, it was like starting all over again." Just when things seemed to be at their worst, Jesse got his first break as one of the lead roles in a children's television program on EBS. Acting alongside him on the program was famous Korean rock vocalist Lee Sang Mi, who had a big influence on guiding him in the Korean entertainment field. After getting offered the EBS show, further opportunities started to appear. Jesse began to develop his acting career in South Korea, appearing in several TV dramas, promotional videos and television advertisements and after one year, achieved one of his main goals in Korea: appearing on one of the most popular shows in the country, Star King. On the program, Jesse made history as the first foreigner to rap fluently in Korean and did so alongside famous Korean speed-rapper Outsider, with a panel that included a who's who of the Korean Pop music industry observing his performance.

Now having appeared as a musician on national television in both China and Korea, Jesse hopes to continue his rise in the Asian music industry and is currently working with Beijing-based Dutch producer Corne on a 3-song demo that will reflect a new style leaning more towards Korean and Chinese mainstream Pop music combined with Hip-Hop. Jesse is currently recruiting members to form a Hip-Hop/Dance Pop group in Asia and would like to be recognized as one of the first Western artists to be active in the Korean and Chinese mainstream music industry. There's still a long way to go but this MC is up for the challenge.
