There's little hope for folks like us when it comes to teaching English officially in Korea, but I've once heard something from one of my students wherein the government is thinking about allowing non-native teachers to teach at schools in the future. They're getting influenced by China's opinions on the matter. China began hiring Indian English teachers a little while back.
Ultimately, try to stick with teaching German at the University...you gotta contact the schools directly though as such positions won't be advertised on job forums online...Good luck!

You simply ask if they're looking for a teacher. Of course, you might get turned down most of the time but there is no harm in asking. Besides, that's why you ought to try smaller towns...it's just some advice. Met people in Korea and in Japan, who've been doing so. Well, sure you could get deported and prohibited of re-entering the country for like five years on your first offense, but that's a risk one has to take. I have American friends who tried it that way, because they weren't legible to obtain an E2 visa due to the fact that they hadn't graduated College in the US, but in Asia.

As for teaching German...I think you might have good chances landing a job at a University considering you've got a MA in education or applied linguistics, am I right? The pay and the hours are definitely way more attractive at the university...

I know how ya feel! I've been there myself. I'm German and I used to teach a lot of Koreans back when I was still living in the Philippines. In fact, my last Job was at a Korean company based in the Philippines just last year. I worked as a teacher in Korea for almost a year back in 2010. Well, I didn't do so exactly legally though...obviously. My former employer wasn't to keen on spending money, and he knew that hiring people on tourist visas would save him a lot of cash. I believe there are people like him in either Korea and Japan...I got lots of stories to tell. Bottomline is...if you go to S. Korea and spend some time looking for a "hagwon"-job in smaller towns, I'm sure you'll find something...if it's just for the sake of experiencing the country while making some decent cash, that'll do it for ya. ;-)
