The hymn you are thinking of is come thou long expected Jesus which Cross of Christ is the usual tune. Its an advent hymn. Strangly enough cross of Jesus cross of sorrow is in the hymn book but rarely used.

We have a good pipe organ in Wednesfield. Only 2 keyboards though. You might want to consider it. The chuch is open most mornings.

We used to sing it on a regular basis when I went to a church that was high church. Last time I sang this was in Lichfield cathedral on maunday thursday.

Wonderful and its diadem as I know it. Takes me back to a church I used to go to where we would have this as the processional for our patronal service. Great opener for a packed church and it really raises the roof. Heard the other verson o f diadem and compared with this it sounds a little bland.

Why is incense being used as it is evensong. Evensong is a service of the world where it is not used. In fact Cramner would be horrified that it was being used at one his protestant services. Have never seen it used for this services even in churches of the anglo catholic tradition.

This is exactly how it is in any choir anthem book. Never come across a second verse.

This hymn has always been special to me since I first learnt it as a Methodist. Quickly became my personal statement of faith - especially verse 4 about my chains falling off. Wished we anglicans would sing the harmony at the end of each verse properly. Its not the same as when Methodists sing it...

No its not. The psalm is usually sung after the general confession if the service is true to the ancient order. The book of common prayer is quite prescriptive that the psalm is part of the ministry of the word. If anything they should be processing out to a hymn. Its hard enough to chant a psalm...

This is the tune I know. We never sing this hymn to St Columba. That tune is not generally used in the UK.

This is what we are having for our offertory on sunday. The hymn is all about the ascension. Good one to keep choristers on their toes as it starts in unison but then changes to harmony.

Unusal tune as we use this one to ye holy angels bright. Gospel is usually the tune used for this hymn.

Could never see myself singing this tune as it does not have the same range of melody as Forest Green. In fact it sounds a bit flat even on a pipe organ. Glas we use Forest Green.
