I know many of you Americans would prefer to be like Switzerland: old democracy, federalism, small gov, private gun ownership, even a social conservative majority!

Back in 1783 you were just like them. But you chose to expand, to grow, to conquer. Switzerland is a small country surrounded by mountains which doesn't care about the rest of the world. You are the foremost global power, and that implies a costly army, foreign wars, debt. You chose to be imperial, now deal with it.

P.S. Switzerland was invaded during the Napoleonic wars. And later on it wasn't invaded not because people there are good shots, but because they were Europe's bank.
