I think the idea of the level was that you'd put up barricades around the open area and send the orcs under the low ceiling. If you do that, I think the pounders might be more effective.

Yeah, I really liked the asthetic of the xp grinder more than that of the elevator.
To match that, maybe you could round off the elevators, and add in some suspension bridge-esque blocks around the bridges (fences in a shallow u-shape w/some extending down to the walkway possibly).
