About this user
We are two dental patients who learned the very hard way what our dental regulators have been ignoring for decades and who haven't had the decency to tell the general public to keep them from harm's way...(PARA)FORMALDEHYDE (active ingredient), LEAD and MERCURY in root canals! Sealed permanently into your body.
Dentists have small compounding pharmacies mix the material and then often sell it against FDA regulations. The FDA is aware of this material, states that "the public can not be assured that this product is safe and effective" but does little to nothing to stop it. Compounding pharmacies are not regulated like drug/device manufacturers.
We want to tell people what we wish someone had told us before we went for what turned out to be life threatening and life altering root canal procedures. Our damages were random and could have happened to anyone.
We, like many others for the last 30+ years, suffered from a condition called an "overfill" which is an acceptable risk of endodontic care where material is extruded out the bottom of the tooth into underlying nerve, tissue, and bone. Overfills are not considered negligent, they are an unfortunate error that can occur with even the most skilled dentist. Overfills with Sargenti paste are far more serious because of the toxicity of the material. The levels of formaldehyde are within the range of embalming fluid.
Every single accredited dental school in this country teaches not to use it, the ADA does not recommend its use, the American Association of Endodontists (recognized by the ADA) has a strong position against the use of this, and the FDA rejected a request for approval in 1993 because of safety concerns related to the formaldehyde. State dental boards don't take actions against dentists who use it until an injured patient shows up damaged and by then the damage is likely permanent.
Injuries can range from chronic sinus infections, nerve damage (numbness and burning pain), chronic bone infections (osteomyelitis), anaphylactic shock and even death. There are and always have been safer and effective alternatives that have been used for decades, including the standard of care material, gutta percha.
Don't assume your dentist will not use it. Educate yourself before a root canal and ask. Many dentists will not inform their patients that they are using a material widely considered dangerous and toxic not only in the US but throughout the world, including after you have been injured. According to many in the dental field, injuries do not always show up immediately after the root canal but can be delayed months to even years.
Educate yourself and ASK. Don't become a random victim.
