Los Angeles based Bangladeshi singer Annie Jilani has already created a wave among the Bengali community in the US. The multi-lingual vocalist has been given the title 'Gaaner Raani Annie' by a Bengali newspaper published from Los Angeles. The artiste recently returned to Dhaka and performed solo for the first time at the city's Hotel Lakeshore in Gulshan.
Annie's performance included a number of versatile songs in different language, representing diverse of moods. She began her performance with the famous soundtrack from the Oscar-winning film Titanic, 'My heart will go on.' Annie's voice is also fitted for the highly grave emotive Ghazals. 'Mujhe tum najar se', a popular Ghazal in Pakistan, had a spell-binding effect on the night when Annie sang it at the event.
She sang one of her favorite Bangla songs 'Ei mon tomake dilam,' the celebrated number by Sabina Yasmin. Annie's performance of Bangla songs also included a patriotic song a Nazrul Geeti and the classic song 'Bhalobasho tumi shunechi onekbar.' Annie did not fail to rock her audience with some hit Bollywood songs either.
The audience in response stormed her with requests, and Annie had to return on stage to continue her exotic musical performances even after the dinner.
About her passion for music, Annie told, 'At one point in my early life, I realize that singing is what I enjoy most. Thus I chose this life.' The diva also commented that the uprising musicians should never give up music. Annie received her tutelage in singing from Bulbul Academy, Ustad Pulind Babu was also her teacher .
She moved to the United States in the early eighties and graduated with a degree in Computer Science from Devry University of California. Her album 'Ami Je Adhaare Bondini' is to be released in Dhaka soon. The singer hopes to perform more in Bangladesh.See More
