Most likely, it is related. Since まぁね is a slang term, its root would most likely be まあまあ.

Yes, I can read English. Also, my response to your comment was fine, because your comment is mainly interpreted as being applied to her. You never have to say directly that it is her you are talking about, because the way you worded it, it is implied you are talking about her.
