Operation Migration training the new juvenile Whooping crane chicks at the Necedah NWR on September 15th and 16th, 2007. These birds, 17 in all, will migrate behind ultralight aircraft in a few weeks, and make the journey from Wisconsin to Florida... over 1250 miles. They will migrate back to Wisconisn next spring on their own. Pilots and ground personnel dress in a white costume... no human interaction ever happens around the chicks, keeping them wild.
