I am the founder of Wheelchairskater.com. I am a paraplegic who is trying to help revolutionize the disabled sports community. Most paraplegic's and quadraplegic's are males 18-25 and the results of Extreme sports injuries (aka skateboarding, cliff diving, skiiing, snowboarding, etc) or car accidents. There is a huge suicide rate, nearly 50%, in the first five years of a new injury. Rehab has taken the stance to treat these individuals as glass and tell them they cannot do the things they use to but rather to adapt to a new life less thrilling. It is no wonder condsidering the personality types most of the new injuries are, they end up giving up. those of us with wheelchairskater.com have found our healing in the reinvention of extreme sports and wish to share or philsophy with others in turn changing the way rehab works at it's very core. Something is very wrong with a system that things a suicide rate of 48% is an accpetible loss.
