Hoplites are tough little sods, but they are slow to move and their armour isnt enough to keep them alive. Of course a few calvery units from the flanks or rear will easily route these sorts of units.
Given the amount of calvery the Julii had, the outcome was very predictable. Calvery against infantry (unless Hoplite etc) is always quite predictable.
