"A Tribute to the American Soldier" -Freedom does not come easily. This lesson has been taught on many battlefields and in many situations -- from Yorktown and Saratoga-to Omaha Beach in a place called Normandy; to Pork Chop Hill, the rice patties and jungles of Viet Nam, to Desert Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan, the terrorist acts of September 11 th , and a place called Iraq. As members of America 's Armed Forces, the American soldier has always believed enough in the concept of liberty-to keep an appointment with freedom. Each day that goes by, would be impossible to maintain that freedom, were it not for that host of Americans-called soldiers. It is entirely fitting that we set aside a time to say thanks-and to honor and appreciate you-our American heroes. You are men and women who protect us all; you are men and women who add to America 's efficiency and greatness. These are not merely words, but a very real analysis of our faith in you and our gratitude for all that you do. Many times, you are faced with a situation that leaves uncertainty of the outcome and there is apprehension about what lies ahead. But, you are men and women of courage, who unselfishly give of yourselves, as you maintain that quest for freedom. Your effort will fill our history books as those American soldiers, men and women alike, who-when called, answered with bravery, enthusiasm, honor, vigilance, and devotion-not only for the American people but for many around the world. You left your homes, your families, your safety and comfort-to place yourselves in harm's way-in the front lines and on the battlefields-in order that freedom could thrive and flourish. You marched into new territory and stumbled into overwhelming circumstances; you invaded corners of the world where the light of knowledge and truth did not exist; you saw the tragedies resulting from hate and fear. But, what is so unique and wondrous and marvelous is the fact that you are a chosen people, sent as pillars of strength to help those who are in need; those who live their lives in oppression and who have never known the ideals of liberty. Through your efforts in the war-torn country of Iraq , a new nation was forged. Whether on America 's soil or in any foreign corner of the world, you stand as a reminder that freedom is often purchased at a very high price. You paid that price with blood, sweat, and tears, and often times, many among you, paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. As fellow Americans, we realize that you love and value life. But, we also realize that you love the ideals of freedom even more; the idea that your children and children of foreign lands, may live free, in a free land, under the blessings of democracy. God knows each of you by name-and wherever you are and whatever you must do-He sends an Angel to watch over you. You are the American soldier who adheres to the philosophy of the late President John F. Kennedy: "For you ask not what your country can do for you-You ask what you can do for your country". There shall not be for one single day, one single event or situation, nor in the light of a ceremony-but each and every day of the year-as you sacrifice, preserve, protect, and defend. We will forever keep you in our thoughts, our prayers, and within our hearts. May God Bless each of you and your loved ones and may God continue to Bless-the United States of America and the people that serve our Country.
