There was no solution until about a month ago, other than to run the open source driver. ATI has recently fixed their driver so it works with gnome-shell. The driver in 11.10's repo is old, I think it's Catalyst 11.9, if I'm not mistaken. Go into additional drivers and remove it. Reboot. Go to A...

The Mint Software Manager was buggy in Mint 9 KDE as well. My old machine is still running it. Also, KDE can be tweaked to be just as usable as Unity or Gnome. I have found it's extremely customizable, and I was a Gnome user from 2006 up until about 8 months ago.

@tostoday As far as I know, Canonical shuts down the repositories on all non-LTS versions after they are end of lifed after 18 months. They keep the repositories open for LTS versions, but you don't get security updates
