A philosophy of "amputees helping amputees" has been the hallmark of The War Amps since 1918, when the organization was founded by amputee war veterans. Counselling, self-help, and practical assistance - along with the desire to preserve Canada's Military Heritage - are common threads that have been retained for more than 90 years.

As a registered charity, The War Amps is funded solely through donations from the public to the Key Tag Service. Since 1946, The War Amps has returned more than one million sets of keys, and the service is more vital than ever with the high replacement cost of car keys and remote devices.

Public support of the Key Tag Service enables The War Amps to continue to operate its many programs, like the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program which provides funding for artificial limbs, counselling and regional seminars.

In the future, CHAMP Graduates will carry on the work of the Association, continuing the tradition of "amputees helping amputees."
