Schaunard only has snippets of recitativo rather than a full aria but in act I, he tells how he's been hired by an Englishman to sing to his parrot until the animal drops dead. That's the only parallel I can see!

@CortezInc55 Yes indeed! And did you notice the whiff of smoke out of their mouths because it's a wink to the Macey Parade in November - while they're supposed to be in a tropical country? It took me four viewings to notice it. I love all the little details in this passage!
