I show a new smoke bomb formula that I am using.
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO ATTEMPT THIS EXPERIMENT:
I take NO RESPONSIBILITY for people getting hurt doing my experiments. I have not included all of the safety precautions that I used.
For the old formula:
Take about three parts potassium nitrate and two parts sucrose.
Mix the two ingredients as powders. Put in a pot and put the pot on a HOT PLATE. DO NOT PUT ON AN OPEN FLAME!!
Put the hotplate on med/high, but if your hotplate goes to 300C ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GO TO HIGH. I have been impatient, and have payed the price in the form of my mixture spontaneously catching fire in the garage.
Stir occasionally for the first five minutes. After ~ 5 min. you will see some of the sugar start to turn brown. Start stirring more frequently.
After about 10 min. most of the sugar will be brown, and you should be constantly stirring. This is the time most people get impatient and turn the hotplate on to high. DON'T!
Once the entire mixture is molten, you may pour it into any suitable container (I use paper dixie cups). Stick a fuse in it (or, for this mixture you can light it directly).
Let it cool and harden -- enjoy. It should look like peanut butter (that's solid).
For the new formula:
Take about 5 parts potassium nitrate and 3 parts sucrose.
Mix the two powders and dissolve both in water.
Put the solution in a pot or pan on a hotplate, turn the hotplate on as high as you want FOR NOW. Wait until you see the first crystals forming because of water loss.
Turn the hotplate to med/high start stirring, and wait for the bulk of the remaining water to evaporate off. There will come a short stage (~ 3 min.) of intense bubbling. During this stage turn the hotplate down to med.
After the bubbling stage, you should keep the hotplate at med., and start stirring more frequently. Do not let the sugar turn brown. Once you hear just a quiet sizzling, then it's your call as to whether you want to stop. I personally didn't wait for the last traces of water to disappear, and my smoke bomb worked fine.
Do not let the mixture melt. You must scoop it into a container. It will probably look pebbly. YOU MUST ADD A FUSE TO THIS. It goes off very suddenly.
