About this user
Nathaniel Bobbitt (b. NYC Harlem) is one of a growing number of flute players that have seen the advantage of buzzing the flute.
A variety of flute players perform the buzzed flute: Keith Underwood, Matt Moller, John McMurtey, Helen Bledsoe, and Aralee Dorough. While Jerome Callet teaches "Superchop" buzzed techniques.
In the Who's Who of Buzz Flute Players Nat Bobbitt has combined extended buzzed flute and circular breathing to arrive at exceptional effects for new media projects supported by Banff Centre for Arts, Carnegie Mellon Univ. National Superior Conservatory France (Lyon), Spanish Ministry Culture, Spanish National Radio (RNE-2), Harmonic Ranch (PBS, French National TV).
Since his days at Darmstadt breathing is key to Bobbitt's ability to transform and hybridize the concert flute's acoustics, intonation, and spectral range. Oregon based Bobbitt continues to research flute, flustist, and extended flute notation for aesthetic, scientific, and commercial applications (Nabslab). See his contribution to Image & Meaning (MIT/Harvard Workshop).
The Acoustic Buzz Sample is from Nathaniel Bobbitt's catalogue of buzzed-flute techniques circa 1994. This recording is a single take without recording or digital manipulation. Thanks to Dr. Richard Boulanger (Berklee College of Music) for support in this recording.
