Breaking the barriers. Remember your first day at your workplace, or at school. Everyone feels awkward, not knowing anyone, and yet you have to prove to the company or school, that you're the one with the knowledge or credentials for that position. Think about your first day of school as a student, wondering if you were going to know anyone in your classes. Everyone has these feelings. Now, imagine, being excellent, at many different things, and having to teach someone, you know the routine, but the other person does not. Anyone can teach but, imagine not being able to communicate with the person you are teaching or coming in contact with, for instance a person walks in, and starts waving their hands, you suddenly realize this person is deaf. You start to panic. Your first response would be to look for a piece of paper, and something to write with. You also have a deadline in which you know you have to meet. You suddenly start feeling awkward, and feeling uncomfortable, There is now a barrier between you and that person. After many attempts, you start feeling overwhelmed with writing back and forth, with this person. You now have a barrier. You start to look for someone to interpret. There is a huge demand on interpreters, not to mention it can be costly. I believe with a little help or basic learning, we can put this barrier aside. (Example)You are out for the night being social, it is loud in the area in which you are. You notice the people across the room, smiling, and having fun. Since you can't hear, you automatically think there is a comedian in the place. From afar you understand, you suddenly want to become part of the action.
Music:
You are smiling with the people; you want to take it to the next level. Now, you decide you want to go introduce your self to this person. You walk up, and introduce yourself. The person starts waving their hands at you; you now become uncomfortable, and realize this person is deaf. No paper, nor an interpreter. You suddenly feel awkward. You know if time permitted you could communicate with this person, after all from afar, you understood. A smile and laughter was easy to spot.I believe if people took the time, to relax and interact with the deaf, they could break the barrier. Everyone needs a social life, in our social life learning still takes part. We have all heard of classes for a variety of fun, such as aerobic, yoga, dancing and singing. When a person is singing, they are in a relaxed frame of mind. They are usually content, and feeling quite confortablewith themselves. This can be very pleasurable. They don't realize they are learning, for instance, they are learning the words to the song. I would like to take this opportunity to try and break the barrier in not only our community, but our businesses as well. I am offering a class free of charge. Bring your social life here, It all starts with a smile, and feeling conformable. We will be singing, and at the same time signing to the words of the songs. You will be amazed at how much you learn, not to mention, having fun at the same time. Come out, and enjoy the class. What better way to learn, and Welcome the deaf, into our businesses, and community!
