In my experience, I find that that part of me that says those things is just trying to give me excuses and keep me from pursuing what I really want, is it that way for you in this case? Don't worry about those things man, I didn't even start piano until I was a senior in high school. Go at your own pace, the important thing (in my opinion) is that your main goal is to express your emotions through the instrument and that you are enjoying it.

as for practical tips, buy jazz cds and listen to them as much as possible (Bill Evans and Shelly Berg (itunes) are GREAT, Chick Corea, Ahmad Jamal), seriously, it's no joke that I can play how I play because of them (and Chet Baker since I played trumpet). Learn simple songs that you really like by ear, I suggest learning all major and dorian scales too.
