@alabamamanable I absolutely agree with you.
But that's my point -- we shouldn't look to Maher as any sort of authority. I only bring up Fox News because they are infamous for making similarly unfounded blanket-statements (and I don't think that FN should be seen as a credible authority either).

I don't think Bill Maher is really much of an authority on religion (or politics, for that matter).
He always seems to me like a walking contradiction: an evangelical atheist, an authoritarian liberal. He doesn't come across as either thoughtful or particularly consistent.
