Pre-amps like this and the BeachTek and the Juiced link are a waste of time. They all go through the on-board A/D converter which stinks in all cases, even the $6k pro camcorders.
This setup can easily be out-performed by a Tascan 40 at $199.

Fluorescent lights DO NOT make strobes obsolete, due to the fluorescent VERY LOW light output compares to even the el cheapo strobes I have.
