The sound of U V PØP has always been a sophisticated blend of sadness; with morose North Country sense and a humorous confrontational sensibility.
That was true in 1981, when the line up consisted of just the one. Since then the band has grown and developed and it can be confirmed the sound, and the philosophy is still; to this day, as morose and, at the same time as positive, as it ever was.
Back again with new material and a carefully polished back catalogue there is evidence still of the melancholy that gave us all hope for today and tomorrow.
In the 1980s there was nothing to smile about; nothing to smile for. The person whom some called wrongly the iron lady brought vengeful spiteful selfishness and a narrow-minded outlook into all our lives.

Cynical politicians seized the opportunity of turning the North Ireland civil war into a huge, money-making theme park. A gruesome adventure playground populated by arms traders, drug dealers, and upper class gun runners. It was operated as a training centre for secret agents and hired assassins.
So, you might ask why 'No Songs Tomorrow'? There is the answer. U V PØP and John White were as certain as anybody there was a strong possibility there might not be anything left with which to make a tomorrow. British interests were to be protected at all costs but only for the benefit of the few.
The fight back, the resistance came in the miners' strike, on the streets of north Ireland and in the sovereignty of popular culture. And, there was plenty of that in Yorkshire and particularly in the southernmost parts of that region. Working class poets had not all died with the Victorians.
The four minute warning sounded, the city council in Sheffield proclaimed the area a nuclear free zone. Even the BBC rolled up there with a play about the decay of society after a nuclear attack on Sheffield. Fiction: in nearby Bolsover, the Coalite plant, the ultimate owners of the Falkland Islands, were turning the milk of the local farmers' cows, an incandescent shade of green.
Against this backdrop John White formed and re-formed U V PØP. The sound as it echoed from the streets was breathy, and desperate. The songs are about the pain of hurting to remember. The poet sang in a hoarse whisper.

South Yorkshire -- Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield, close, yet apart, the names were known on the electricity. Proper shows for the delight of the public because the public was the promoter. We knew what we liked and what we wanted to hear. Bands were booked to support headliners yet things occasionally got out of hand. Culture Club came to the Leadmill and everyone was taken completely unawares because they had hit the number one spot the previous Thursday.
So many bands that became huge first got a taste at the beginning of the 1980s. It was happening in Sheffield because the ears of the world were tuned our way.
It was not all LPs. There was still a healthy market for singles. U V PØP had those as well. The Rough Trade charts for one week in 1982 tell a very interesting story. Alongside acts of the caliber of Sisters of Mercy, Robert Wyatt, Sex Gang Children and Virgin Prunes are U V PØP, their place well-earned.
Someone once wrote: there is a little of U V PØP in us all. I would suggest it is in the rhythmic, menacing, repetitive 'Sleep, Don't Talk'. The conscience; guilty or otherwise, of one man against the world, as renowned journo Pete Scott once summed it up. Something has happened that he had no control of but, he wanted it to happen anyway. Alienation presented to us as cause and as a symptom. Human anguish and resignation given voice by automata in mantra-mode trying to serenade the ending of yet another relationship.

Depends on where you are.
We all know them and so should you.
To paraphrase the devil possessed inspirational speaker on 'Commitment', a track from album #1 'No Songs Tomorrow', they took it and did the best they could with what they had at that time, because they had a commitment. Their commitment was and is to make music; because they have to.
They haven't lost that but you might, if you don't use it.
