Saqib Ul Islam, Urdu VOA News, Washington While the importance of effective teachers for better learning has received a great deal of attention in recent years, the role that principals play in ensuring that students have access to excellent teaching staff and equipment has received much less consideration. Principals play a critical role in developing a strong teaching workforce within a school by hiring teachers, assigning them to specific positions, evaluating them, and providing growth opportunities for them. This report is based on a discussion held at the Center for American Progress called "Principals' Role in Schools and Educational Institutions".

Sarah Zaman, Urdu VOA News, Washington
Cheating and plagiarism are a major problem in Pakistan's academic system. However, academic institutions in America are also constantly making efforts to reduce incidents of academic dishonesty. Natalie Milman, a professor at George Washington Univsersity says there are cases of students, mostly at the school level, using cell phones to save answers or surf the web to get help on their exams. At college/ university level she says plagiarism is a bigger concern and every institution puts its academic integrity policy on the web and teachers inform students about it. Aisha Chowdry, a Pakistani American student at American University and a freelance journalist, says professors provide guidelines about using copyrighted material and students are constantly being warned about the implications of academic dishonesty. Yianna Vovides with GWU's Center for Innovative Learning showed us "Safe Assign", a computer application that teachers can run papers through if they suspect plagiarism. The software searches for similar information through various databases to determine originality. Vovides says if a school cannot pay for the software, teachers can always enter portions of an assignment into a search engine to see if something similar is available on the web. Students found guilty of academic dishonesty can be asked to re-do the assignment or in extreme cases be expelled after a committee comprising of students, faculty and staff has conducted hearings.

Saqib Ul Islam, Urdu VOA News, Washington America's colleges and universities are strapped for resources, students and families are faced with sky-high tuition increases, and higher education is in crisis across the country. Many experts and policymakers are asking if the business model of higher education is broken and if we need a new way of thinking about how colleges can fulfill their role in society without breaking the bank. Center for American Progress presented a debate on this topic and a paper written by Harvard Business Professor Clayton Christensen. The study offers an explanation of the changes in higher education through the lens of disruptive innovation, showing how new technologies like online education are forcing colleges and policymakers to rethink the way they deliver education.

Amina Kamal Khan , Urdu VOA News, Washington Experts at the US department of education say that teaching children about and equipping them against bullying at an early age may be key to preventing serious harm later. Earlier this year the Department of Education issued a 'dear colleague' letter recommending that schools formulate policy and take action against bullying on campus. The seriousness of this problem is not lost on the administration of a public charter school in DC, where students are taught to identify and confront bullying, while teachers and parents are encouraged to watch out for early warning signs. Interviewed for this story: Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary for Safe and Drug-Free Schools (US Department of Education) and Michelle Molitor, Principal at the E. L Haynes Public Charter School in DC.
