About 40 percent of the New Mexico state prison population battles the hepatitis C virus, and most of those incarcerated now will be released within ten years. An innovative program developed by UNM's Project ECHO® trains select prisoners to educate the general population at their prison about hepatitis C and other key health issues, and how to reduce the chances of transmission.
