Artful Solutions: Pathways from Homelessness Armory Center for the Arts Community Room Gallery 145 N. Raymond Ave. Pasadena, CA | View Map April 25 June 28, 2010 Opening: Saturday, April 24th, 2-4pm Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, Noon-5pm Now in its third year, the Armorys Artful Solutions program offers no-cost, sequential art instruction to homeless adults and families. The resulting artwork from this instruction will be on display in the Armorys Community Room through June 28th. The artwork is available for sale. All proceeds are given directly to the artists.
Artful Solutions has grown significantly in 2010, now offering year-round artistic instruction to 27 individuals. After 11 weeks of instruction in painting, drawing, and printmaking, participants are encouraged to enroll in Armorys classes free of cost. Additionally, they can take advantage of a weekly, moderated open-studio session that meets on Sunday afternoons. There are also employment opportunities for participants. Two participants are currently employed by the Armory, assisting with other educational programs in the community.
Artful Solutions is made possible though a partnership between the Armory, Union Station Homeless Services and the Pasadena Police Departments HOPE team.
The Armory offered a pilot version of the program called Families in Transition during fall of 2008, in partnership with Union Station Homeless Services and the Pasadena Police Departments HOPE team. In a series of workshops, individuals and families from the various shelters throughout Pasadena developed their drawing and painting skills and created a body of work which were then exhibited in the Armorys community gallery and sold. The proceeds went directly to the participants.
During 2009 the collaborative project was awarded funding from the LA County Arts Commission. The new program Artful Solutions: Pathways from Homelessness was the nations first arts and culture initiative that formally addressed needs of the homeless population. LA County funding provided additional experiences, including ceramics, screen printing, photography and digital storytelling.
