The initiative, called the 3ADI for "Accelerated Agribusiness and Agro-Industries Development Initiative" was launched in August 2010 in response to a request from the Commission of the African Union; The 3ADI partners are working on the ground in least developed countries to promote the expansion of local and international value chains that benefit the small producers and entrepreneurs, who create jobs and income, and who gradually transform the rural world to turn it into an attractive career proposition to the eyes of the youth in search of a better future. It is no longer a subsistence occupation carried out from generation to generation as a matter of tradition: it is a complex business with its technological, scientific, human resource, marketing, and accounting demands.
It is predicated on driving an alignment of individual actions and priorities between public authorities responsible for emitting signals that are clear, consistent and observable by all; those responsible for transport, energy and communication infrastructure; the rural world, its skills and organization; the holders of scientific, technological and financial resources, domestic and foreign; the inputs, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and advisory services providers; access to markets with its increasing requirements of quality, safety, standardization and traceability. The resources exist, the will is evident, especially at the core part of the value chain that is the processing segment; the question is to catalyze their convergence in a situation that provides attractive returns to all stakeholders, while addressing at the same time the most necessary of the Millennium Development Goals, reducing poverty and hunger worldwide.
The 3ADI is a teamwork initiative of UNIDO, FAO and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Small Hydro Energy for Africa - the Sierra Leone Case
UNIDO helps Africa utilize its natural resources in order to produce sustainable energy in remote rural areas. This site in Sierra Leone is part of the Bankasoka river and is one of the locations where the construction of a mini hydro plant should begin later this year. The river - even during the dry season, has the capacity to produce 3 megawatts of renewable energy, according to international research and engineering teams. The location, through which the river flows is a major agricultural area in the North of the country.

New UNIDO report highlights importance of industrial energy efficiency for sustainable development Industrial energy efficiency is key to sustainable industrial development, especially in developing countries, according to a flagship publication of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
UNIDO's Industrial Development Report, launched today at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, urges investment in energy-efficient technologies in order to provide the economic, environmental and social dividends that will help achieve sustainable growth.
The publication, entitled "Industrial energy efficiency for sustainable wealth creation: capturing environmental, economic and social dividends", stresses that sustainable energy production is essential to overcome the major challenges the world faces today.
Presenting the report, UNIDO Director-General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, said: "A world that has just reached a population of seven billion must take into account industrial energy efficiency if it wants to address such challenges as green growth, employment generation, security, climate change, food production and poverty reduction. Industrial energy efficiency is essential for strengthening economies, protecting ecosystems and achieving social benefits."
The UNIDO report states that energy consumption could grow even faster as developing countries reduce the income gap and grapple with growing populations demanding more manufactured products. This makes it imperative to remove barriers that currently impede energy efficiency investments.
The Industrial Development Report has a special focus on developing countries, backed by a set of unique statistics on Manufacturing Value Added (MVA), manufacturing export trends, and other key indicators. It also presents UNIDO's Competitive Industrial Performance Index.

Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, UNIDO Director General, on Agribusiness for Africa's Prosperity.
Opportunities and challenges for African agribusiness and agro-industries are the focus of a new book published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
"Agribusiness for Africa's Prosperity" outlines the current status of agribusiness and agro-industrial activities in Africa, and situates them in historical and global context. It analyses the opportunities for diversified growth, and assesses the existing and potential sources of demand growth for agribusiness development on the continent.
In recent years, a renewed focus on agriculture has been evident in policy and development agendas for the African continent, yet little knowledge has been generated on the inter-linkages of production, agro-industry and markets, as well as the potential and capacities for developing them.
Edited by Kandeh K. Yumkella, Patrick M. Kormawa, Torben M. Roepstorff and Anthony M. Hawkins and with contributions from a wide range of international experts, the book fills what UNIDO perceived as a significant gap in knowledge concerning these issues.
It was conceived as a resource for policymakers, agribusiness managers, and researchers in agribusiness development.
The book is available in English and French and can be downloaded here: http://www.unido.org/index.php?id=100... For printed copies in English and further information, please email: publications@unido.org
