The return of fall sports and youth athletes back on the field means millions of youngsters will experience an injury even before their sports season is officially over. Youth sports account for almost four million emergency room visits each year.
Dr. Edward Wojtys, orthopaedic surgeon and associate director of the University of Michigan Bone & Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Center, says youth sport injuries are preventable and simply should not happen, especially when coaches and parents work together to understand the importance of injury prevention programs.

Research at the Bone & Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Center (the Center) is inching one step closer to solving a mystery that affects at least 400,000 youth athletes every year and causes them to sit on the sideline for months.
A new study, led by Center members and Kinesiology Professors Riann Palmieri-Smith and Scott McLean, will determine which components of current ACL prevention training programs actually work to reduce injuries.

more
More than half of all youths will suffer injuries to their musculoskeletal system. For kids as young as 12, this means that joint ligament tears, concussions, and multiple surgeries can be the norm. This injury epidemic will worsen unless we make immediate changes.
The good news is research at the University of Michigan reveals basic performance enhancement and prevention programs can drastically reduce youth injuries proving that an ounce of prevention goes a long way.
The University of Michigan Bone & Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Center was recently established to reduce musculoskeletal injuries and conduct focused research to understand the mechanisms of injury.
The U-M Center has internationally recognized researchers and clinician-scientists working to solve the musculoskeletal injury epidemic. Collectively, our vision is to create lifelong musculoskeletal health for people all of all ages and all activity levels.
