As it has for many years, The University of Iowa Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble braved the elements to perform holiday favorites for a chilled but enthusiastic crowd on the last day of fall semester classes.
The Dec. 11 concert carried on a years-old tradition that includes University and community members. The performance takes place on the steps of the Old Capitol (although it moved to the steps of Macbride Hall in the years immediately following the Old Capitol fire).
In addition to performing the usual mix of season favorites, along with such holiday tuba classics as Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer and Underdog, the group teamed up with Toys for Tots to collect toys for children in need.

In May, 1984, Peter Feldstein, a native New Yorker and art professor at the University, invited the 693 residents of his new hometown, Oxford, Iowa, to be photographed. He asked them to come dressed as you are and to stand in any way they chose, against a wrinkled construction tarp. By late summer, 670 residents had been photographed and the following spring Feldstein displayed their photos in the Oxford American Legion Hall.
Twenty years later, Feldstein, decided to re-shoot the residents of Oxford. This time, he joined forces with UI journalism professor Stephen Bloom, who interviewed the photo subjects and compiled first-person vignettes from their conversations. The results were published in The Oxford Project (Welcome Books, 2008).
Spectator@IOWA talked with Feldstein (in the video, left) and Bloom (right) about the experience of photographing and interviewing the citizens of Oxford, Iowa.

Theres nothing quite like game day. Thousands of Hawkeye faithful gather to see friends, eat brats, and cheer on their team. Fans start securing favorite tailgating spots at the crack of dawn and for hours before kick off the aromas of pork burgers and extremely large turkey legs waft from grills in parking lots and lawns around Kinnick Stadium.
There are traditions inside the stadium as well: the roar of the crowd as cheerleaders race bedsheet-sized I-O-W-A flags across the field, followed by the Hawkeye team, and the blare of classic rock songs intermingling with the names of players who land a catch or take down an opponent.
Whether the Hawks are having a good year or one thats less than stellar, Hawkeye fans are renowned for their dedication to the team and for making it a day at Kinnick stadium.
