In the fall semester of 2001, R.J. Panda and Chris Dresko set out to change the face of a cappella at UConn by forming a group which excelled in musicality and performance presence. After running a set of auditions, the two leaders chose eight other members - namely, Mat Bryant ("Grundle"), Nick Pinkerton ("Pink"), Dan MacDonald ("Danny Mac"), Brendan McNerney, Nick Wade, Tim Cassell ("Timmer"), Keith Sevigny ("K-Rock"), and Jonathan Richter ("Monkeyboy"). These original members set a standard of excellence that is still upheld in the group today.Individual vocal development, originality, musicality, and personal loyalty to the group are just a few of the qualities set in place by the first Conn-Men. Furthermore, the Conn-Men have become quite notorious for various "antics" in their bi-annual concerts. Skits, videos, and members dressing in drag are at the top of the list of Conn-Men shenanigans. The Conn-Men have developed a dedication to always being the best they can possibly be.
In 2007 the Conn-Men were the winners of the NCHSA New England Collegiate A Cappella Competition. The group also won awards for best soloist (Matt Prior), best vocal percussion (Dan Carroll), and best showmanship. Other notable achievements in their history include four straight victories in the UConn Alma Mater Competition (2002-2005), winners of the UConn Husky Pride Award (2004), and being chosen to open for Rockapella at their 2006 and 2008 performances at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts.
In 2008 the Conn-Men were invited through Governor Jodi Rell's Office to represent the state of Connecticut with a performance at the Eastern States Exposition (aka the Big E!) on CT Day. In the same year they were heard by First Lady Laura Bush's Chief of Staff and UConn Alumna Anita McBride when they were performing at a UConn Alumni Association Awards Gala. Mrs. McBride invited the Conn-Men to perform at the White House during the Holiday Season. The Conn-Men traveled down to Washington D.C. in December and performed at the White House, Yorktown High School, and the Music Educators National Conference Headquarters in Reston, Virginia.
