It was probably an instinctive reaction; one of the herd panicks and the rest follow. kind of like how a couple of dogs and drive a heard of sheep despite being massively outnumbered. at least, thats what i think.

Possibly, but if there is any bird that could potentially be doing something like this for fun it would be the crow, or another Corvid. Crows are incredibly intelligent and i personally think that if the crow was trying to eat that thing or use it to some purpous, it would only slip down...
