ANGELIKA BLUEWith the face of a supermodel, the body of a pinup and the voice of an angel, singer/songwriter Angelika Blue is a multi-dimensional artist. The self-described "character singer" uses her multi-octave classical trained range, which includes the sixth octave (reached by coloratura opera sopranos and Mariah Carey), to create a unique fusion of high-energy pop, rock and R & B that she calls "expressive." "I was born and raised in New York City and I see a lot of color, so I like adding different effects, characters and edges in what I'm singing."
Drawing comparisons to Mariah Carey and her idol Chaka Khan, Angelika cites a surprising early influence—Jessye Norman. Thanks to specials on public television, she developed an infatuation with opera and Norman at an early age, imitating her favorite diva while seated underneath neighbors' windows outside her Bronx apartment building. From the stoop steps, Angelika graduated to classical voice lessons and a spot in New York's famed High School of the Performing Arts, where she took added rock, musical theater and jazz to her repertoire. Recognizing her impressive vocal range, Angelika's teachers encouraged her to sing a variety of styles. She also ventured into the local music scene where older musicians inspired her to branch out, suggesting artists she should listen to.
Angelika perfected her craft in the trenches, performing at local clubs with veteran artists. She thanks the seasoned professionals who took her under their wings in an industry that is notorious for being merciless, especially the women: "These women had natural sass. They would give me a piece of advice, so it helped me learn faster and grow up faster." With skills developed from years of performing live and guest appearing on other artist's recordings, Angelika Blue began writing music for her own projects. Her lyrics contain a healthy dose of the sass she learned from the vets and reflect a sexy, confident, thoroughly modern woman, with a romantic edge. Angelika makes a point of incorporating live instrumentation with digital sounds, striving for the more organic sounds of rock and pop in her mix. She is also studying the electric bass and piano in her quest to become a well-rounded musician. "I feel like musicians are mutants—you know like 'X Men.' Musicians are powerful! I think that whatever your spiritual beliefs are, whether it's God or Allah or Buddha, after that come music. Music is more powerful than anything else. You can change the world through Music!" Angelika Blue's CD will be released in 2012.
