After becoming a member of the NATO Alliance on 18 February 1952, Turkey initiated a comprehensive modernization program for its Armed Forces. Towards the end of the 1980s, a second restructuring process was initiated.
The TAF, with a combined troop strength of 1,054,750 soldiers,is the second largest standing force in NATO (after the United States).Currently, 36,700 troops are also stationed in the north of Cyprus.[citation needed]
European Union officials state that the addition of the Turkish Armed Forces into the EU Military Framework will enable it (the EU) to be a true global player and super power. The TAF already participates in European Union battlegroups under control of the European Council, as a part of the Italian-Romanian-Turkish Battlegroup, which will be on standby for duty during June--December 2010. It also contributes operational staff to the Eurocorps multinational army corps initiative of the EU and NATO.
NATO officials also state that the modern day Turkish Armed Forces are "very experienced and well-trained".
ARMY
The Turkish Army is one of the largest standing armies in the world and the second largest army of NATO.[4][5] The Turkish Army can deploy an Army Corps of 50,000 men to conduct joint operations at short notice.[8] The Army can conduct air assault operations with a lift capability of up to six battalions at a time, day and night
Air Force
The Turkish Air Force is one of the oldest air forces in the world and operates one of the largest combat aircraft fleets of NATO. In its long history, many famous air aces and aviation pioneers have served in the Turkish Air Force, including Sabiha Gökçen, the world's first female combat pilot. Supported by the TuAF's in-flight refueling capability, the fighter jets of the Turkish Air Force can participate in international operations and exercises on every major continent and return back to their home bases.
Navy
The Turkish Navy has historically been one of the largest sea powers of the Mediterranean. Supported by its replenishment ships, the Turkish Navy can participate in international operations and exercises on every major sea and ocean of the world. Submarines can individually navigate up to 15,000 nautical miles and return back to their home bases.

TSK'nın vazifesi Anayasa ve yasalarla belirlenmiş olup, 2000'li yıllarda Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri, yeni güvenlik sorunlarına ve krizlere uygun şekilde reaksiyon göstermek, belirsizliklere karşı hazır olmak, iç ve dış tehdit ve risklere karşı ülkenin güvenliğini sağlayabilmek için; Caydırıcılık, Güvenlik / Harekat Ortamının Şekillendirilmesi, Savaş Dışı Harekat (Barışı Destekleme Harekatı, Doğal Afet Yardım Harekatı ve İç Güvenlik Harekatı), Kriz Yönetimi, Sınırlı Güç Kullanımı, Konvansiyonel Harp, gibi faaliyetleri icra etmektir. Bu bağlamda, değişik görevleri ifa edebilecek, çok rollü elastiki birliklerin teşkil edilmesine, sayısal fazlalık yerine gelişmiş teknoloji ürünü silah ve sistemlere sahip olunmasına, bu silah ve sistemlerin etkinliğini artıracak komuta-kontrol, erken ihbar ikaz, elektronik harp, gelişmiş mühimmat, her hava şartlarında harekat imkan ve kabiliyeti gibi kuvvet çarpanlarına sahip olunmasına önem ve öncelik verilmektedir. Global ve bölgesel dengelerin henüz tam olarak oluşmadığı içinde bulunduğumuz politik ve askeri ortamda, bölgemizde ve dünyada barış ve istikrara katkıda bulunmanın yanı sıra, iç ve dış tehditlere karşı ülke savunmasını sağlayacak Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri'nin, yeniden yapılanmasında aşağıdaki kabiliyetlerin idame edilmesi ve geliştirilmesi hedeflenmektedir. Caydırıcı askeri gücün idamesi, Komuta, Kontrol, Muhabere, Bilgisayar, İstihbarat, Keşif ve Gözetleme sistemleri, Üstün hareket kabiliyeti ve ateş gücü, Silahlı Kuvvetlerin nicelikten çok niteliği esas alan, ileri teknoloji ürünü silah ve sistemler ile teçhiz edilmesi, Her hava ve her ortamda gece ve gündüz şartlarında harekat icra etme kabiliyeti, Kitle imha silahlarına karşı hava/füze savunma ve NBC korunma kabiliyeti, Stratejik intikal, Müşterek ve Birleşik Harekat icra etme kabiliyeti, Klasik savaşın yanında, barışı destekleme, terörle mücadele, doğal afetlerde yardım, kriz yönetiminin desteklenmesi, sınırlı güç kullanımı, abluka, ambargo, insani yardım, göçü önleme gibi değişik harekat türlerini ifa etme kabiliyeti. TSK yeniden yapılanma faaliyetlerini, soğuk savaş sonrası oluşan yeni politik-askeri stratejik ortam, Türkiye'nin güvenliğine yönelik iç ve dış tehdit, Anayasa ve yasaların kendisine verdiği görevler çerçevesinde sürdürmektedir.
