My take on creation is that Genesis 1:1 is millions of yrs. ago, with no biblical date. And then you have the rise and fall of Lucifer on this earth, and the rise and fall of the dinosaurs,and then God sending judgment on this earth shutting it down, because of Lucifer's rebellion. Now Genesis 1:2 6000 yrs ago, biblically dated, God restores the earth for mankind. It's called the gap theory. A time gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. There are other time gaps in the Bible.
A little more info. I also believe Noah's flood was the second universal flood, the first one was genesis 1:2 "the face of the waters". And genesis 1:2 could be read "but the earth had become..."
