About Me:
Leni Ward is a multi-instrumentalist working from her purpose-built studio in Derby. Leni's early work was picked up by Steve Lamacq in early 2009, later inviting Leni on to his BBC Radio 2 show for an interview as his featured Artist of the Week. Tom Robinson of BBC 6 Music was also an early supporter, picking Leni as the opening act for his inaugural Fresh On The Net Session at the Riverside Studios in April 2009. Strong regional support also lead to Leni being chosen to perform on the first BBC Introducing stage at T In The Park in July 2009. Several other DJs have also been strong supporters, including Dermot O'Leary and Gideon Coe.
In late 2009, Leni went into the studio to begin work on her upcoming album, "Hope". Rich with vibrant harps and swirling synths, the record, inspired by the breakdown of Leni's seven-year-long relationship in the middle of last year, aims to be a celebration of life moving forward rather than a wake. "After the breakup, I didn't want to waste any more time," says Leni. "I wanted to get out there and focus my energy on the things I wanted to do in life. I didn't see the point of sitting, miserable, listening to down-tempo music and moping. I'd choose dancing over depression. I think the music reflects that."
In the studio, Leni is the sole writer, producer, recording engineer and performer, playing a wide variety of instruments across the course of the album. Live, Leni recreates the rich layers of her recorded work by becoming a "modern one-woman band", playing two keyboards simultaneously and triggering samples and effects with her feet.
"Opening Doors", the lead single from Leni Ward's upcoming album, "Hope", got some great support at radio. Strong support from BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson, Nemone and Lauren Laverne, as well as Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 2, were followed by playlisting on BFBS, instore nationally at Topshop and features on "The Beat", England's largest regional new music show, and The Selector's "Goldierocks". "The Beat"'s Dean Jackson called Leni's "I Want My Heart Back" "One of my favourite tracks of the whole year."
Success at radio went hand in hand with response from the written press, both online and in print. Hugely positive reviews ran in The Times, The Mirror, TNT Magazine, QX, Mizz Magazine and industry publication Music Week. Opening Doors was featured as Q Magazine's "Track of the Day" on qthemusic.com. Numerous blogs and ezines also picked up on Leni early on in the campaign, including ElectroQueer, I House U, AAA Music and God Is In The TV.
