Believe it or not, one of the biggest hits in Motown history almost was never finished and when it was it was nearly never released. "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1966 and twice was recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles to a lukewarm reception. Whitfield still believed in the song so he recruited Marvin Gaye to record it. After several run-throughs and some artistic squabbles between Gaye and Whitfield, the recording was left unfinished. In the meantime, Gladys Knight & The Pips decided to record it, and their version became a hit. When that happened Marvin Gaye decided to complete his version of it with Whitfield using the Andantes for background vocals and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra alongside the Funk Brothers. When Berry Gordy was presented with the final product, he didn't want to release it on top of Gladys Knight's hit recording of it so Gaye's version went on the shelf for another day. In September of 1968 it was decided to place Gaye's version on an album he was releasing with no intention of ever putting it on a 45 rpm for general release to the dj's and public. However, the dj's across the nation began playing the cut from Gaye's album, and Berry Gordy finally relented on Oct. 30, 1968 and released a 45 rpm version which would become, at the time, the biggest hit Motown had ever had (surpassed some years later by the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There"). Marvin Gaye's version is now listed by Rolling Stone as one of their "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time", and the recording received another resurgence in 1983 when it was used in the film "The Big Chill".

This video, set to the infectious tune "Dreamer" by opera singer turned pop star, Elizaveta, follows the evolution of RA as a performer, Captions take us through with early publicity stills through screencaps of smaller to larger roles, ending with his dream role as Thorin in the upcoming Hobbit movies. I haven't included every single role, but there are quite a few, and it is fun to see how he has changed over the years.:D So glad he never stopped dreaming!! And yes, there is a goof . . . I am merely human. ;)

Yes, I've also watched the Xmas special countless times. It's just so delightful!! Oh gosh, I can't wait til the Hobbit comes out either. It will be sooooo amazing! I really do hope this opens up more acting opportunities for him on the big screen. Fingers crossed!!! Have a wonderful week!

Sorry it's taken so long to reply to you. I've been busy with work, so I am very behind in replying to my emails! Thanks for the feedback on the US version of Strikeback. The main reason I didn't watch it was because there was no RA........so it's sounds like it was a good thing that I didn't waste time trying to watch it!!!LOL!!!! Did you see him in the Xmas special of The Vicar of Dibley? He is absolutely gorgeous in it! And his character is sooooo adorable!!!! They were the only episodes of the show that I watched. I would definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it yet! Have a wonderful
, relaxing Sunday!
