Those SSRs are real nice for that application, I think they use zero cross switching so there are no switching transients. I've used them with PID controllers to ramp up heating elements for laboratory use.

I had the same model Sheritone radio, in the mid 80's. Low cost substitute for the Walkman radios of the time. It has two headphone jacks so two people can listen. I remember it was very power hungry and would consume an alkaline 9V battery pretty fast.
