We can't expect to have a reward after we retire from our jobs, or pay off the mortgage, or when the kids graduate.

A reward is probably not in the cards, but creaky joints and frequent trips to the doctor 's office probably are.

That's why we have to devote ourselves to what we are passionate about now; to do that thing that makes us come alive.

Then, to complete the circle, we write a book about our experiences so that others can follow our path.

First, we are inspired, then we, in turn, inspire others.

As Albert Schweitzer said,

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."

The true rewards in life, such as reading to our children at night, walking with our spouse in the evening, sharing warm thoughts with friends, and yes, the satisfaction of inspiring others or being inspired ourselves, come our way every day.

But, we're easily distracted and unable to appreciate these rewards because we are focused on long-term, ephemeral, goals and rewards.

In truth, the journey is the reward.
