I've never known anyone to try and hold an armbar sitting up. Generally you grab the arm, lock the hands out with your ankles and lay back to apply torque. I don't think the technique works if the opponent isn't sitting up.

Don't like it. It wouldn't be hard to brush or sweep the attacking arm, but instead the technique teaches to simply close the gap. Closing the gap is good, but entirely reliant on your body speed vs their arm speed. Most of us aren't that fast.
