Tryad (also t r y ^ d, t r y Δ d) is an Internet musical group that formed in January 2005 (not to be confused by an earlier band of the same name). They are among the first music groups to publish all their works on Creative Commons licenses. This band is an excellent example of remix culture.
Tryad's members were originally rjmarshall, vavrek, arna, and John Holowach. emma, Karen Rustad, Scott Waddell, and hisboyelroy joined later. Also note that the members are not all in one geographical area: vavrek, emma, and arna are in Seattle, Washington, USA; John Holowach and Scott Waddell are in seperate cities in Ohio, USA; Karen Rustad is in California USA; and rjmarshall is in Japan. Since all of the members have never met in one place, they create all their music over the Internet.
Holowach discovered a song that rjmarshall had posted under a Creative Commons license, remixed it, then posted it on his own website. vavrek subsequently found that song and added vocals, which lead to the formation of the band.
Their first album, Public Domain, was released 3 August 2005. By their own account, the genre is industrial classical pop (also as "trip-hop, alt. rock, classical instrumentation, and electronica"). Many of the tracks on this album are a member's earlier work or include samples of other songs.
Tryad is presently working on another album entitled Listen, to be released in the last quarter of 2006.
